Inspired by "Gulliver's Travels," the fantasy-adventure Castle in the Sky (1986) was Hayao Miyazaki's third feature, and helped to establish his reputation as a visionary in both Japan and America. The orphan Sheeta inherited a mysterious crystal that links her to the legendary sky-kingdom of Laputa. With the help of resourceful Pazu and a rollicking band of sky pirates, she makes her way to the ruins of the once-great civilization. Sheeta and Pazu must outwit the evil Muska, who plans to use Laputa's science to make himself ruler of the world. Castle echoes elements in Myazaki's earlier Nausicaä, and anticipates imagery in his later films, from My Neighbor Totoro to Spirited Away. Disney's new English dub, which features Anna Paquin (Sheeta), James Van Der Beek (Pazu), and Cloris Leachman (pirate matriarch Dola), is lively and close in tone to the original Japanese, if a bit talkier. The exciting flying sequences, appealing characters, and fantastic vision of a steam-powered future Jules Verne might have imagined make Castle in the Sky a must-have for fans of Japanese and Western animation. A great movie.

Laputa. Castle in the Sky. Castle in the Clouds. Whatever you call it, this is that movie. And a good one it is. Haven't watched the second disk for the rest of it, but the movie itself is great. It still makes me laugh when Miyazaki's characters can climb a vertical surface with just their fingers and toes, though. I feel so sorry for those robots up there all alone for so long with only the birds to keep them company. I really appreciate the theme of less can be more/better for you that Sheeta's ancestors chose to follow when abandoning Laputa. The Sky Pirates start off as rough/bad guys, but they fall apart for a crying little girl just like any guy should.

Poor executed translation
Review date: 2010-07-12 Rating: 6 out of 10

This is not my favorite Ghibli movie. It doesn't hold up quite as well as some of his other movies like Kiki or Totoro, but it is a very beautiful and fun adventure. Unfortunately, it is colored by a very poor translation.

I watched the movie subtitled. Sometimes the subtitles would correspond to people that weren't talking. Other times, the subtitles would disappear before you get a chance to read it. There would even be dialog that was left completely untranslated! I'm pretty sure the subtitles (I am not referring to the English for Hearing Impaired option) is the text for the english dub which worked most of the time but at times was completely off.

Overall I am very disappointed in this piece of work. It is a shame that such a classic film will be memorialized with such poor treatment.

Just a beautiful thing

This is a really good title from Studio Ghibi, if not their best (apart from Howl's Moving Castle). The concept is interesting (and explained if you watch the background of the opening credits) and it's got something for everyone. There's the main story, which is a nice story of plucky children, and the back story of spies and political power (albeit in a simplistic, cartoon form!) and some really good steampunk technology for those who like it.All of this in some of the most beautiful animation you've ever seen. The English soundtrack is well rendered and fits perfectly with the animation.

It's just lovely.

Pazu is an orphan who works for the owner of a mine and one night after everyone has left he sees something falling from the sky. He runs up to a platform and sees that it's a young girl floating down from the heavens. Just as he tentatively reaches out to catch her, almost as if she weren't real, she stops floating and falls heavily into his arms, almost knocking him off the platform himself. The girl's name is Sheeta and she is on the run from the leader of this organization who wants to get his hands on a crystal Sheeta got from her grandmother and keeps on a necklace. Pazu decides that he'll help Sheeta escape both the man and an unruly gang of pirates who are also after the crystal. This back and forth chase leads everyone to a mythical castle in the sky. Pazu's father got lost in a storm surrounding the island and Pazu has been preparing to go find the floating castle that his father was searching for.

This is a wonderful film. There is action, adventure, romance, and suspense. It's both whimsical and grounded at the same time. The movie is about a dream of a floating castle, but that fantasy and whimsy is brought down to earth by greed and power. The characters are wonderful and I enjoyed the dynamic between Sheeta and Pazu. A wonderful film for all ages.
