Compellingly Bizarre and Original.Review date: 2009-05-01 Rating: 8 out of 10I really enjoyed this film. I would describe it as a cross between Donnie Darko, Virgin Suicides, and Mulholland Drive. I thought about giving up on the film at a few points because it got a little too bizarre for my tastes, and I think that the dialog could have been a bit better (redeemed largely in the latter half of the film), but essentially I have never seen anything quite like it before. The young age of the main characters and protagonist throw an interesting twist on the traditional "metaphysical" film themes, although I suppose Donnie Darko used this same idea. I would have liked to get to know the protagonist a little bit better -- her character seemed a bit off the walls for me, and how she came to instigate this experiment (what motivated her to be self-actualized in this way) did not seem all that believable or credible because the audience never gets to know her character very well until the end of the film. All in all, this film takes you on an interesting experience. I really enjoyed the filming techniques and the soundtrack is amazing. I recommend this film for anyone who can handle "bizarre" films more firmly based around a concept than a plot.
Reviews
One of the worst films I have ever seenReview date: 2009-04-03 Rating: 2 out of 10I wasn't sure what to expect when I rented this film ... but I certainly didn't expect what I got. This film is incredibly slow moving so much so that it borders on being boring. The photography is horrible. The story line is a secret wrapped in a mystery cloaked in an enigma. The one redeeming aspect of the film is the music which is great.
Others have compared this film to some of David Lynch's work but I just don't see it. Lynch's films were at least understandable on some level. This one isn't.A Real Nice SupriseReview date: 2009-03-07 Rating: 10 out of 10Wow! What a great movie, I had to watch it twice. Then I tracked down some of the music and bought it. Lavender Diamond is one of the bands featured and as original and fresh as this flick. Enjoy!A beautiful and deep filmReview date: 2008-11-24 Rating: 10 out of 10This film is such an incredible work. So beautifully shot and wodnerfully acted by this cast of mostly unknowns. If you liked Donnie Darko, David Lynch films, or some of the great Italian masters like Antonioni and Fellini, you willt least be able to apreciate this rare kind of American independent film. Oh, and I love the music. Lavender Diamond, Joan Jet and others. Awesome!
