Jon Kasdan's directorial debut, In the Land of Women, is a touching romantic comedy portraying the love quandaries of a hip, Hollywood twenty-something to show how his fast-paced life as a porn screenwriter encourages the jaded attitude at the root of his angst. Carter Webb (Adam Brody) hangs out in a recognizable Los Feliz cafe, where in the opening scene he is dumped by his sultry Gap-model girlfriend. In hopes of salvaging his last ounce of creativity to pen a real story, Carter escapes to peaceful, suburban Michigan to care for his grandmother, Phyllis (Olympia Dukakis). Phyllis' death obsession, however, drives him outdoors, where he befriends neighbor Sarah Hardwicke (Meg Ryan) and her two daughters, Lucy (Kristen Stewart) and Paige (Mackenzie Vega). Bonding with both the more mature Sarah, sick with breast cancer, and the discombobulated teen Lucy, Carter redefines love with his new understanding of what it means to think about things other than one's self. Bright, crisp color and fairly natural lighting lends the film a contemporary feel, and the script is surprisingly unsentimental. Ryan's performance--less saccharine than some previous--along with Brody's wry character and Dukakis as a bitter dying woman, help the film to avoid corny melodrama so common to the genre. Unfortunately, the ending is too neatly tied up, but not enough to destroy what emotional poignancy the film has generated. Ultimately a critique of the vacant, superficial lifestyle that a life in Hollywood perpetuates, In the Land of Women leaves one wondering whether Kasdan's attraction to the script wasn't based on his own Los Angeles experiences. —Trinie Dalton

Kristen as a blond!
Review date: 2010-07-28 Rating: 8 out of 10

I watched this movie because of Kristen, in which she is great as always. I was pleasantly surprised to see Olympia D in a great role; she plays this old lady who is sure she would die soon and was great in this role, funny and sad. Meg R delivers but the rest don't.

Pleasant and likeable enough...
Review date: 2010-07-11 Rating: 8 out of 10

...for what it is: a light comedy/drama that doesn't try TOO hard to Say Something Meaningful...yes it has its share of focus-grouped cliches and stock characters, but overall there is just enough originality to make it work.

This film is beautifully shot, with lush vibrant colors, a decent cast and script. There were a few marketing-driven compromises made of course, but they were not fatal. My only complaint was that there were a couple of parts where the pop-rock soundtrack was a bit intrusive and I felt like I was watching an overly stylized music video.

Otherwise, the main characters are talented and attractive enough to get me through it. Not the kind of movie that I would want to own because I couldn't see myself going back to watch it again and again, but overall plenty enjoyable for what it is.

PS. Kristen Stewart looks so much better NOT as a blonde! I missed her natural dark hair here, but she still managed to light up every scene she was in.

I find this film very well made and the story very touching. Meg Ryan, Kristen Stewart, and Adam Brody all gave tremendous performances in the film. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not that often that you can find a touching story in today's movies, rather then just plain action.

I HATED THIS MOVIE!!!!!
Review date: 2010-02-20 Rating: 2 out of 10

This movie was dumb, dirty and disgusting! Meg Ryan looked like the crypt keeper in this movie as well! The only bright spot in this movie (and only real reason I rented it) was Kristen Stewart. She's good as always! But I wouldn't waste time seeing this one when there are so many good movies out there to watch!

Surprisingly Good
Review date: 2009-12-22 Rating: 8 out of 10

The latest of my wife's movies that I watched with her turned out to be a surprisingly good picture that kept me guessing all the way through.

Adam Brody plays a soft core porn writer who goes home to take care of his grandmother just after his girl dumps him. He find an Alzheimer ready Olympia Dukakis, a Meg Ryan dealing with multiple crises and her daughter who is having a series of crises of her own.

In a complete reversal from her (my wife's) last movie But I'm a Cheerleader the characters do not follow any of the pre-defined routes that one is conditioned to expect in this pictures. Every time I was ready for an event something totally different happens. The only character that was a bit cliched was the youngest daughter who had much too much wisdom and even so it isn't as overdone as one might expect.

None of the performances are spectacular but all of them are good. A lot of the credit goes to writer director Jon Kasdan who gives them material that provides enough drama to make a story and enough comedy to keep the picture flowing. So have no fear, if your wife asked you to sit down with this one you won't be bored.
